Emma Johnson's Learning Portfolio

Age 8

Report Period Jan 5 - Mar 27, 2026
Total Entries 12

Emma's education this term has combined structured literacy and numeracy practice with project-based learning, trips, discussion and practical work. The selected activities show steady progress in English and maths, growing independence in research tasks, and regular social, physical and creative learning.

English

01

Creative Writing: The Magic Forest

Emma planned, drafted and edited a short story about a child discovering a woodland path. She focused on paragraphing, dialogue punctuation and descriptive vocabulary. Compared with earlier writing, she is now checking her own sentences more independently before asking for help.

02

Reading Journal: Varjak Paw

Emma used a reading journal to summarise chapters, infer character motives and explain her opinions with evidence from the text. She is beginning to write fuller answers and can now explain why a character might behave differently from how they feel.

Maths

03

Fractions with Pizza Making

A practical lesson using halves, quarters and eighths while making pizza from scratch. Emma compared equivalent fractions, calculated ingredient quantities and divided portions fairly. This helped her move from recognising fractions to using them in a real task.

04

Geometry Through Architecture

Emma identified symmetry, angles and shapes in local buildings, then sketched examples and calculated simple perimeters. She used a ruler and protractor with less prompting than last month and could explain the difference between acute, right and obtuse angles.

Science

05

Pond Dipping at Nature Reserve

Emma explored a freshwater habitat using a dipping net, identification sheet and nature journal. She identified pond skaters, water boatmen and a newt, then recorded observations with labelled sketches. Her notes show more accurate scientific vocabulary than earlier nature study work.

06

Botany: Plant Life Cycles

Emma planted beans in clear cups, measured growth and kept an observation chart over three weeks. She learned the terms germination, root, shoot and seedling, and used the measurements to describe change over time rather than only drawing the final plant.

History

07

Victorian Era Museum Visit

At the local museum Emma compared Victorian school life with modern education. She completed a worksheet, asked questions about classroom objects and wrote a short paragraph explaining three differences she noticed. This built on our previous timeline work.

08

Ancient Egypt Research Poster

Emma used library books and BBC Bitesize clips to research pyramids, mummification and hieroglyphics. She created a poster with headings, captions and labelled illustrations. She is becoming more selective when choosing facts rather than copying whole paragraphs.

Art

09

Watercolour Autumn Leaves

Emma collected leaves, mixed autumn colours and painted from observation. She experimented with lighter washes before adding detail and could explain how adding more water changed the tone. She has become more patient when building up layers.

10

Holiday Card Lino Printing

Emma designed and carved a lino block for printing holiday cards. She learned about negative space, practised safe carving techniques and tested different ink colours. She reviewed the first prints and adjusted pressure to get a clearer result.

Physical Education

11

Map Skills and Orienteering

Emma practised reading Ordnance Survey symbols, using a compass and following a simple local route. She worked with two other children to find checkpoints and took turns leading. This supported physical activity, geography and collaborative problem solving.

12

Swimming Skills Session

Emma attended a swimming session focused on front crawl breathing and water confidence. She can now swim a longer distance without stopping and is more confident putting her face in the water. The session also gave her structured time with peers.
